The following recipe is a favorite of my Mom’s. For someone who is not by any means a heavy drinker, a whiskey based cocktail is a surprising choice for a go-to drink. This is her preferred ammunition for grading dissertations and theses out by our pool. We’re not sure if this is helpful or harmful to students’ grades. My prefered whiskey for this drink is Bulleit bourbon. I mainly use this for its mellow flavor; it’s also the cheapest whiskey I like to drink straight. With mixed drinks and whiskey, it’s more than acceptable to use bottom shelf booze, as detecting a whiskey’s intricacies when combined with lemon juice and sugar is a tall order. Simple syrup is a sugar syrup comprised of equal parts by volume of sugar and water boiled. It is critical that the mixture is boiled lest it crystallized when cooled.
